The Organization

APA (Amateur Music Players' Association, Japan, pronounced ei-pa, ei as in eight) is a non-profit organization for amateur chamber players established in 1974. A nationwide network, it currently consists of over 1,000 members, of whom 650 reside in the Tokyo Metropolitan area, 350 in the Kansai area, and about 100 are scattered around other parts of the country. There are regular meetings for chamber music all over Japan-- for instance there are more than 20 groups meeting once or twice a month within the Tokyo metropolitan area alone.

ACMP GOING PLACEs

APA participates in ACMP’s (Associated Chamber Music Players) Going Places program, an initiative to promote international exchange by making it easier for ACMP members to find people to play with when they travel outside their home country. If you are contemplating visiting Japan for tourism or on business and wish to join ensembles during your stay, please contact APA’s POC, Sayoko Yamashita, apa.goingplaces@gmail.com. APA will try to organize chamber music sessions at locations convenient to you, and we may also be able provide instruments for use during your visit.

In April, 2019 APA hosted our first visitor from the USA through Going Places. Here is her report.

Please also see our Facebook page: APA-Going Places.

INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

We are pleased to announce that the next APA International Chamber Music Festival for amateur chamber music players will be held April 8-18, 2024. The festival returned in 2023 after a COVID19-induced hiatus. This year's format will be similar to last year's, with three concerts, the one in Hakone, play-in-syle. With Covid on the wane in Japan, we hope to see many more of our foreign friends return.

OVERVIEW OF THE APA INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

The APA International Chamber Music Festival 2024 (ICMF2024) provides a venue at which both overseas and Japanese amateur players can participate in cultural exchange through music. Players from overseas visit Japan for the Festival to enjoy playing, performing and socializing with Japanese amateur players. It is a basic tenet of the event that ensembles will comprise both international visitors and Japanese players in mixed groups. Attendees should plan to prepare their music before traveling, as the emphasis of the Festival is on playing, and rehearsal time will be limited. Details about the Festival and the application to partipate can be found here.

PARTICIPATION IN OUR LOCAL MEETINGS

Regular APA chamber music meetings are held all over Japan, some weekly, some monthly, some less often. For ACMP members visiting Japan, the Going Places program described above is a good way to get introduced to these groups; others may send email to info_english@apa-music.org. Below is a table listing the chapters, and regular meetings and concerts.
